SUMMARY:Preparing the Aircraft Commander for the 21st Century - Confer
 ence
DESCRIPTION:Monitoring - What are we doing about it?\nAviation is argu
ably the most regulated and structured activity in common use today. D
efinitions abound, from how to refuel an aircraft to how to enter wayp
oints in a flight management computer; from the details of the multi-c
rew pilot licence, to the ground lighting required for a Category III
automatic landing: And everything in between. Some things, however, se
em to be taken at face value, with the assumption that they are perfec
tly understood: innate, and therefore not requiring explanation. One o
f those things is monitoring.\nAt this Flight Operations Group confe
rence we will address the subject of monitoring and in doing so will s
tart by asking the question, 'What is monitoring and what are we doin
g about it?  We will attempt to identify what is often talked about b
ut rarely described in a way that can form the basis of successful tra
ining. \nThe need for monitoring extends well beyond the aircraft, it
s engines and systems, and includes tasks undertaken routinely by pilo
ts and other flight crew members to manage the flight path directly or
through autoflight equipment, to operate systems and electronic equip
ment, and to respond to annunciations of flight progress. While most p
ilot actions will be necessary for continued safe flight, the first la
yer of protection against weakness in human performance lies in the pr
ovision of effective monitoring, the aim of which is to identify error
s preferably before they are made but afterwards if necessary.\nAviati
on is not the only Industry that requires Monitoring skills, and we ha
ve assembled an impressive list of speakers who are all leaders in the
ir fields and will offer their thoughts on the subject. Our objective
is that by the end of the conference we will have a clearer idea of th
e problem and how it can be addressed in training programmes.\nFor mor
