The Pan Am airline brand, defunct for the past two decades, is hoping its prominent appearance on a new TV series will give its brand the lift it needs as it sets it sights on returning to passenger travel in Latin America by 2012. Pan Am, once iconic of the glamour and excitement that was air travel, will be the backdrop for an ABC show running this fall called "Pan Am," which follows the lives of Pan American World Airways crew members in the early 1960s.

NBAA 2011 Deemed ‘Highly Successful’
As the 64th NBAA Convention closed yesterday, association president and CEO Ed Bolen deemed it a “highly successful” show. “What we are seeing is that the show is providing real value to the business aviation community, even in these challenging economic times,” he said. “The convention continues to be a must-attend event for anyone whose passion or profession involves business aviation.” According to NBAA, the three-day show in Las Vegas drew 26,077 attendees, 7 percent more than last year’s convention; 1,106 exhibitors, a 2-percent increase from a year ago; and 101 aircraft on display, including 85 at the sold-out static display at Henderson Executive Airport, five inside the Las Vegas Convention Center and 11 at the first-ever outdoor static display adjacent to the convention center. Notably, international registration was up more than 23 percent from last year, with nearly 4,000 representatives from 88 different countries present at NBAA 2011. “By every key measure, this year’s convention met or exceeded NBAA’s expectations,” Bolen concluded. “Equally important, the level of enthusiasm we’ve seen from show participants tells us that their expectations were met or exceeded as well.”

NTSB TO INVESTIGATE AIRSHOW SAFETY
The NTSB will hold a hearing next month to gather information about the safety of air races and airshows, the board said on Friday. During a one-day meeting on Jan. 10, the board will hear from regulators, aviation organizations, industry groups, and airport authorities to learn about safety practices, procedures and protocols. The board also will gather information about the safety regulations and oversight in the planning and execution of these events. In September, a pilot and 10 spectators were killed in an accident at the Reno Air Races, and several performers died in U.S. airshow accidents over the last season.

Sebring LSA expo booms with traffic, sales
Good weather, good attendance, and strong sales gave light sport aircraft manufacturers a lift at the Sebring U.S. Sport Aviation Expo Jan. 19 through 22. FAA officials logged 1,256 air operations Jan. 21, the busiest day of the show, including 200 in the first hour—a rate of arrivals and departures that rivaled the nation's busiest airports, and made Sebring Regional Airport the busiest airport in Florida
