Steep turns are all about being smooth.  Use a consistant roll rate in and feed in your back pressure and power bump (experiment with how much you need and do it without needing to look at the tach).  All three movements roll, pitch, and power need to practiced and practiced.  Your entry is the key, if you can get it smooth and stable there you can make micro adjustments on all three as you go around.  I also like to hear it verbalized rolling in back pressure coming in and with power and call you max bank angle (there is 45).  Don't forget your feet either as the rudder and a coordinated turn is more stable.

Steep turns are a great teacher and should be practiced by all pilots.  We do them at the airline in the Boeing as part of every check ride.
