Adam, I have heard the same as you, though I have not used either for any serious flying. I only have FlightSim X.

I gave my info to American Flyers and they sent me a FREE Instrument Rating Learning Guide, which is their textbook for the IR. Right now they're offering online courses at $75.00.

Anyone have any opinions about American Flyers? I'm thinking about taking the online course.

Adam, try ASA Virtural Test Prep - Instrument Rating

The biggest challenge for many is that IFR flight requires more structure.  Most pilots when flying VFR a bit lax when it comes to procedures, profiles and flows.  This is not to say that they are irresponsible, but IFR flight (by it's very nature) requires a more professional approach.  Once a student tightens up their procedures, profiles and flows...the rest gets easier for them.

what is the hardest part for a student to pick up going from VFR to IFR in their initial training

Strictly legally, you shall stay clear of clouds when flying VFR - regardless if have a CFI on board or not. So if you want to enjoy the experience, your CFI should file an IRF plan anyway...

If you think ahead of plane, there´s no reason to woryy about IMC :-) However, I was myself stupid enough to fly right into clouds - actually, I commenced my U-turn too late and got right into the stuff. I live in a country where 5000ft brings you well above virtually any terrain obstacles. No panic then, just make sure wings are level (art. horizon), carb heat, full throtle, climbing to 5000 and turning 180 degrees. As I was close to a CTR, I called the tower, the guy gave me vectors and helped me to manouvre out of the clouds. But I decided to go for the IR anyway, not cheap, not easy, but it a) gives you more opportunities to fly and b) improves your safety margin.

I agree that the training costs are high - however the benefits very much outweigh the cost - especially of life of oneself and of your passengers. Even if you dont get the rating and take an initial course to familiarize yourself then this will add less panic if you get into those IMC situations - then if you have a session with an instructor once every few months then the skills are there when needed. I am not saying fly into IMC with these skills but my experince is that you will be a lot better equipped. Good job in using your hood experience to get you out of that sticky situation. Do you have local flight school that could give you some acutal training?

None. Other than an accidental encounter with clouds while flying through a mountain pass. Used my hood training to do a 180 and get back to VFR conditions. IFR training is pretty expensive for a GA pilot's casual use and requires lots of IFR flying to keep the rating.

How much experience of flying IFR do you have at the moment? I would highly recommend doing some IFR training in actual conditions as hood training is very different from actually being in the white stuff
