The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar was a VTOL aircraft that was originally designed as a fighter-like aircraft capable of very high speeds and altitudes. When the U.S. Air Force gave up on it the U.S. Army tried to use it as a high performance helicopter. The Army quickly learned of the Avrocar's thrust and stability problems and cancelled the project in 1961.
