Event Description

Monitoring - What are we doing about it?

Aviation is arguably the most regulated and structured activity in common use today. Definitions abound, from how to refuel an aircraft to how to enter waypoints in a flight management computer; from the details of the multi-crew pilot licence, to the ground lighting required for a Category III automatic landing: And everything in between. Some things, however, seem to be taken at face value, with the assumption that they are perfectly understood: innate, and therefore not requiring explanation. One of those things is monitoring.

At this Flight Operations Group conference we will address the subject of monitoring and in doing so will start by asking the question, 'What is monitoring and what are we doing about it?  We will attempt to identify what is often talked about but rarely described in a way that can form the basis of successful training.

The need for monitoring extends well beyond the aircraft, its engines and systems, and includes tasks undertaken routinely by pilots and other flight crew members to manage the flight path directly or through autoflight equipment, to operate systems and electronic equipment, and to respond to annunciations of flight progress. While most pilot actions will be necessary for continued safe flight, the first layer of protection against weakness in human performance lies in the provision of effective monitoring, the aim of which is to identify errors preferably before they are made but afterwards if necessary.

Aviation is not the only Industry that requires Monitoring skills, and we have assembled an impressive list of speakers who are all leaders in their fields and will offer their thoughts on the subject. Our objective is that by the end of the conference we will have a clearer idea of the problem and how it can be addressed in training programmes.
