Advances in electronic and video surveillance technology have made the prospect of controlling local airport trafffic from a distant, remote facility a real possibility.

Several Air Navigation Service Providers are currently investing millions of dollars into research, development and trials of the concept with an expectation that ATC costs at low density airports can be significantly reduced.
