Weekend Preflight: Four Fly-In Ideas And An Air Show Opportunity

With unseasonably cool temperatures and a forecast of continued severe clear, this coming weekend is shaping up to be perfect for getting out and stretching your wings. And what better way to do that than by enjoying the company of friends and fellow pilots at a fly-in? We’ve preflighted four that you might want to check out as well as one opportunity to see a local air show from an insider’s perspective.

Lodi, CA (O20) - A short hop to the east, the Delta Flying Club will be holding an Aircraft Show & Pancake Breakfast beginning at 8:00am Saturday. Admission to the show is free, and a $5 donation is suggested for the breakfast.

Boonville, CA (D83) – Along the coast to the north, the members of EAA Chapter 1027 will be hosting the 12th annual Boonville Airport Day. Festivities begin at noon on Saturday, with a potluck dinner at 5:00pm. For those interested in making it a weekend, on-airport campsites are available and airport manager Kirk Wilder will be hosting an informal hangar party Friday evening.

Oceanside, CA (KOKB) – A bit further south, the Oceanside Airport Association will be hosting a Fly-In & BBQ beginning at noon on Saturday. Activities will include an RC air show and custom car display. The show is free, and lunch will be available for $6. If flying in, please check NOTAMs, as the field will be closed temporarily for the RC air show.

Avalon, CA (KAVX) – For those of you who’ve never had the thrill of landing at the “airport in the sky,” the Catalina Aero Club invites you to join them for their monthly Display Day Fly-In from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday. Any aircraft over 50 years old lands free.

Watsonville, CA (KWVI) – Finally, we’d like to encourage anyone who’s ever enjoyed an air show or fly-in to consider making their way over to Watsonville Saturday to find out how they can volunteer to help with the 47th Annual Watsonville Fly-In and Air Show. The show is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, and volunteers are still needed for a variety of activities. Anyone interested should call 831-763-5600 or show up at Fire Station #2, 370 Airport Blvd, Watsonville, CA between 10:00am and 2:00pm.

That does it for this week’s preflight. Time to get flying!
