What are SOPA and PIPA?
SOPA and PIPA represent two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively. SOPA is short for the "Stop Online Piracy Act," and PIPA is an acronym for the "Protect IP Act." ("IP" stands for "intellectual property.") In short, these bills are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet. Detailed information about these bills can be found in  the Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act articles on Wikipedia The EFF has summarized why these bills are simply unacceptable in a world that values an open, secure, and free Internet.

How would SOPA affect HangarChat.com?

SOPA and PIPA will severely inhibit people's access to online information. This is not a problem that will solely affect people in the United States: it will affect everyone around the world.

They put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won't have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn't being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won't show up in major search engines. And, SOPA and PIPA build a framework for future restrictions and suppression.

Does this mean that HangarChat itself is violating copyright laws, or hosting pirated content?

No, not at all. Some supporters of SOPA and PIPA characterize everyone who opposes them as cavalier about copyright, but that is not accurate. The HangarChat team carefully monitors the site and we do are best to remove infringing content.

How to take action?

The most effective action you can take is to call your senate representatives and tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA, and any similar legislation.

WOW! Thank you! I was just saying something similar to this on LinkedIn with respect to IFE for Business aviation as well as Airlines. All it takes is someone to point at you and say you are in violation and you are blocked. Claim some IP is being pirated and you are being blocked. Here is a scary point say you own an aircraft it is not in production anymore and you find data online that you need to use to support what you are doing. That data could now be blocked! it is not just Hollywood it is anything that is claimed to be owned by someone else. Ok lets say this passes! and now we have "BIG Brother" watching out for us! When will it stop? Where will it stop? I have an AA1 that I rebuilding and I can only get the data I need from the group that is helping support these aircraft. Guess what I am up a creek with out a paddle! All someone has to do is say that data is theirs and it is blocked. When the FAA asks me where I got the manuals and what not what do I tell them now? SOPA and PIPA are so bad all the way around! I guess this will stop hackers from attacking us if the website is blocked! Here is my point about what started this; if I purchase a DVD or a BlueRay that is now mine! I am not going to share it! go get your own! But do not block me from being able to helping friends or better yet make me the criminal cause you feel it is wrong in your book. The USA needs to wake up and let everyone know this is bad! And we need to think through this not react with more bad policy. GO figure that the approval rating for the US congress ...... well SUCKS! (Sorry!)

Thanks for bringing this issue to the forefront. I will write to my representatives & HOPE they listen :)

SOPA, PIPA and now the NDAA are stripping us of our right to due process.  SOPA and PIPA can allow corporations to completely shut down a web site based on unfounded accusations and without due process in a court of law.  The NDAA allows the US Gov to indefinitely detain US citizens without charge and access to a lawyer or the judicial system.  This is setting up an environment where dissent is squelched and adversaries can have their competition forced out of business (especially the big guys shutting down their mom and pop competition that cannot afford to defend themselves).  I suggest that you contact your representatives, as I have, and protest all three of these bills.  Suggest that they read the Bill of Rights and Constitution again to refresh their memories on the topic of a Democratic Republic.  Wikipedia is blacked out today protesting these bills.  See this link if unfamiliar with a Repulblic form of government: http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/659-qa-republic-i...
