Avid, as part of an effort to refocus on its professional line, has sold its consumer audio and video editing units. InMusic, parent of Akai Professional, Alesis and other brands, is acquiring Avid's consumer audio brand, while Corel is buying the video editing business; the transactions are valued at a combined $17 million. NBAA welcomed the unanimous passage last week of legislation intended to provide general aviation (GA) pilots with more equitable treatment during federal
enforcement actions against them, and improve the presentation of notice to
airmen information used for preflight planning. Senate Bill 1335, known as the
"Pilots' Bill of Rights," received strong support from lawmakers on both sides
of the aisle. "This is a big victory for general aviation pilots all across the
country," said Sen. Jim Inhofe, who introduced the bill last year. "This bill
remedies many of the most serious deficiencies in the relationship between
general aviation and the FAA, and ensures that pilots are, like everyone else,

Piper Aircraft plans to celebrate its 75th birthday, as well as the 75th birthday of the Piper Cub, next month. The aircraft manufacturer will display a vintage Cubat the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012, from July 23 to 29. The distinctive yellow Piper Cub first appeared on the market in 1937. Fla. aims to be hub for unmanned aerial vehicles
Florida is hoping to create a hub for unmanned aerial vehicles in the Sunshine State. "The skies over Florida will look dramatically different in the years to come," Space Florida President Frank DiBello said. The Federal Aviation Administration predicts that about 10,000 commercial UAVs "could be active within five years," this feature says.
Analysis: Number of glider pilots doubled in past 10 years
Columnist Daniel Russell delved into Federal Aviation Administration data to find out what types of pilots had increased in the past decade. According to his research, the number of glider pilots increased by about 2.5 times from 2001 to 2011. In 2011, more than 21,000 glider pilots in the U.S. had their airmen certificates.
